Weta Limited release Doctor Who Collectibles - Xoanon @ 16:06 PST
Visit wetanz.co.nz

Today Weta Limited announced they will be creating, in collaboration with BBC Worldwide, a line of Collectible statues based on the popular television series, Doctor Who.

Doctor Who is produced by the BBC and is the longest-running science fiction television series in the world. It follows the adventures of a time-traveller called ‘the Doctor’, who travels time in a phone box, solving problems and righting wrongs.

The Weta Collectibles line will incorporate key moments from Doctor Who. The initial series will consist of four pieces, all of which capture a nostalgic scene from the series. Each piece will be made at 6th scale and made out of high quality polystone. Weta Sculptors Ben Hawker, Dan Cockersell, Eden Small and Gary Hunt created the pieces in collaboration with Weta Model Maker David Tremont.

Selected pieces will be on display for the first time ever at the 2007 San Diego Comic Con from 25 – 29 July, meaning that Comic Con attendees will be the first to view the range. The Weta Limited stand is number 2615. The official images of the pieces will be revealed the following day, on 26 July.

The first episode of Doctor Who launched on BBC Television on 23 November 1963. There have been more than 600 episodes, 150 stories and two television movies. The show has become a television favourite for fans worldwide and has influenced generations, including David himself. He says he has been a fan of the series since a child, and when the opportunity came up to create Weta Collectibles based on the series he couldn’t believe his luck. “I started watching the series when it first aired back in the sixties”, he says. “It was inspiring to watch. The images scared the heck out of me as a child, but at the same time they were so fascinating, too. I really learned the meaning of ‘watching from behind the couch.’ In fact, it was the Doctor Who series amongst others that inspired me to get into model making in the first place.”

David says the series set the benchmark for television drama. “Doctor Who pushed the boundaries with their imagination, it was so very different from anything else I had ever seen”, he says. “It’s a very unique, very exciting story. I mean, who else could have thought of travelling time in a phone box!?”

Weta Limited Manager Jamie Wilson said the opportunity to work on Doctor Who merchandise is exciting for all involved. “Doctor Who is such an iconic series, with a huge following all over the world”, says Jamie. “We have chosen memorable moments from the series that capture the power, emotion and transformed them into dynamic collectible pieces. We hope the fans will enjoy these collectibles as much as we have had making them.”

Pricing, purchasing dates and edition size announcements will be made at a later date.

Pre-Ordering opens for ManMelter Raygun - Xoanon @ 21:18 PST
Weta Limited will open the ManMelter Raygun for pre-ordering exclusively to their VIP clients this Friday 13 July. The Raygun, officially titled the ManMelter 3600ZX Sub-Atomic Disintegrator Pistol, is the third Raygun to be released for pre-ordering from the ‘Weta Originals’ limited edition series.

The lightest of the initial three Rayguns from the series, what the ManMelter lacks in weight, it makes up for in its gadgets and technical wizardry. The compressor valve on its rear makes a charming 'thunk' sound when used.

The Manmelter case contains various doo-hickeys and tools, among these are Phlogiston canisters. Unfortunately the Phlogiston has not survived the rigours of time and all that is left is its telltale blue residue, left over from missions past.

The ManMelter is a limited edition piece, with only 500 made worldwide. Each ManMelter comes with a velvet lined pressed tin case, which also doubles as a display stand for the Raygun. The ManMelter is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity and an assortment of implements and crafting tools.

The ManMelter can be pre-ordered by VIP members from Friday 13 July, and general public seven days later, on Friday 20 July, by visiting www.wetanz.com/rayguns.

New Book: 'The Frodo Franchise' - Xoanon @ 17:42 PST
The University of California Press is pleased to announce the publication of: The Frodo Franchise: "The Lord of the Rings" and Modern Hollywood

Kristin Thompson is an Honorary Fellow at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Her many books include "Film Art: An Introduction" and "Film History: An Introduction" (both with David Bordwell) and "Storytelling in the New Hollywood".

"This is the best all-around view of the Tolkien phenomenon. Thompson understands the books, she understands the movies-she also understands the money and the franchising. Best of all, she understands the people. Thompson offers cultural criticism of the highest order, examining one of the most significant shifts in contemporary popular media."-Tom Shippey, author of "The Road to Middle-earth"

"Once in a lifetime." The phrase comes up over and over from the people who worked on Peter Jackson's 'The Lord of the Rings'. The film's seventeen Oscars, record-setting earnings, huge fan base, and hundreds of ancillary products attest to its importance and to the fact that 'Rings' is far more than a film. Its makers seized a crucial moment in Hollywood-the special effects digital revolution plus the rise of "infotainment" and the Internet-to satisfy the trilogy's fans while fostering a huge new international audience. The resulting franchise of franchises has earned billions of dollars to date with no end in sight. Kristin Thompson interviewed seventy-six people to examine the movie's scripting and design and the new technologies deployed to produce the films, video games, and DVDs. She demonstrates the impact 'Rings' had on the companies that made it, on the fantasy genre, on New Zealand, and on independent cinema. In fast-paced, compulsively readable prose, she affirms Jackson's 'Rings' as one the most important films ever made.

Full information about the book, including the table of contents, is available online: go.ucpress.edu

Yoshiko's brother, Ayano (Tadanobu Asano) is just visiting his hometown and staying with the family, but also has ashidden agenda; he needs to come to terms with a romance that ended years ago. Even Nobuo's brother and successful manga artist Todoroki has his problems. It's his birthday soon and he wants to give himself something special. And lastly there's Grandpa, the most bizarre and perhaps the most perceptive of all, who continues to search for a better way to live life to the full.

Blood Diamond (HD DVD): An ex-mercenary turned smuggler (Leonardo DiCaprio). A Mende fisherman (Djimon Hounsou). Amid the explosive civil war overtaking 1999 Sierra Leone, these men join for two desperate missions: recovering a rare pink diamond of immense value and rescuing the fisherman's son, conscripted as a child soldier into the brutal rebel forces ripping a swath of torture and bloodshed across the alternately beautiful and ravaged countryside. Directed by Edward Zwick (Glory, The Last Samurai), this urgent, intensely moving adventure shapes gripping human stories and heart-pounding action into a modern epic of profound impact.

The Warriors (HD DVD): A battle of gigantic proportions is looming in the neon underground of New York City. The armies of the night number 100,000; they outnumber the police 5 to 1; and tonight they're after the Warriors - a street gang blamed unfairly for a rival gang leader's death. This contemporary action-adventure story takes place at night, underground, in the sub-culture of gang warfare that rages from Coney Island to Manhattan to the Bronx. Members of the Warriors fight for their lives, seek to survive in the urban jungle and learn the meaning of loyalty. This intense and stylized film is a dazzling achievement for cinematographer Andrew Laszlo.

Flatliners (Blu-ray): Are you afraid to die? Kiefer Sutherland isn't. He's an ambitious, charismatic medical student who persuades classmates Julia Roberts and Kevin Bacon to take part in a reckless experiment. To see if there is life after death, they will kill themselves: temporarily shut down ("flatline") their heartand brain functions to briefly experience clinical death. After Sutherland survives the first experiment, the others flatline for increasingly longer intervals. But their horror begins when they realize that although they've come back alive... they haven't come back alone. Flatliners is a chilling suspense thriller of obsession, fear and redemption that will take you across the line to a place where terror lives forever.

The Patriot (Blu-ray): In 1776 South Carolina, widower and legendary war hero Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) finds himself thrust into the midst of the American Revolutionary War as he helplessly watches his family torn apart by the savage forces of the British Redcoats. Unable to remain silent, he recruits a band of reluctant volunteers, including his idealistic patriot son, Gabriel (Heath Ledger), to take up arms against the British. Fighting to protect his family's freedom and his country's independence, Martin discovers the pain of betrayal, the redemption of revenge and the passion of love.

The Untouchables (Blu-ray): The critics and public agree. Brian De Palma's The Untouchables is a must-see masterpiece - glorious, fierce, larger-than-life depiction of the mob warlord who ruled Prohibition-era Chicago... and the law enforcer who vowed to bring him down. This classic confrontation between good and evil and stars Kevin Costner as federal agent Eliot Ness, Robert De Niro as gangland kingpin Al Capone and Sean Connery as Malone, the cop who teaches Ness how to beat the mob: shoot fast and shoot first.

A sympathetic prison head (Agnes Moorehead) tries to help, but her efforts are subverted by cruel matron Evelyn Harper (Hope Emerson). Marie's harsh experiences turn her from doe-eyed innocent to hard-nosed con.

climates: Winner of the prestigious Fipresci Award at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, CLIMATES is internationally acclaimed writer-director Nuri Bilge Ceylan s sublime follow-up to his Cannes multi-award winner DISTANT. Beautifully drawn and meticulously observed, the film vividly recalls the cinema of Italian master Michelangelo Antonioni with its poetic use of landscape and the incisive, exquisitely visual rendering of loneliness, loss and the often-elusive nature of happiness. During a sweltering summer vacation on the Aegean coast, the relationship between middle-aged professor Isa (played by Ceylan himself) and his younger, television producer girlfriend Bahar (the luminous Ebru Ceylan, Ceylan s real-life wife) brutally implodes. Back in Istanbul that fall, Isa rekindles a torrid affair with a previous lover. But when he learns that Bahar has left the city for a job in the snowy East, he follows her there to win her back. Boasting subtly powerful performances, heart-stoppingly stunning cinematography (Ceylan s first work in high definition) and densely textured sound design, CLIMATES is the Turkish filmmaker s most gorgeous rumination yet on the fragility and complexity of human relationships.

Colossus of Rhodes: A Greek military hero named Darios visits his uncle in Rhodes in the year 280 BC. Rhodes has just finished constructing an enormous colossus of Apollo to guard its harbor and is planning an alliance with Phoenicia which would be hostile to Greece. Darios flirts with the beautiful Diala, daughter of the statue's mastermind, while becoming involved with a group of rebels headed by Peliocles. These rebels seek to overthrow the tyrannical King Serse as does Serse's evil second-in-command, Thar. The rebels' revolt seems to fail, with Peliocles and his men being captured and forced to provide amusement in the local arena, but an earthquake eventually upsets, not only the Colossus in the harbor, but the balance of power in Rhodes as well.

Cult Camp Classics 1 - Sci-Fi Thrillers: Three feature-length commentaries accompany the sci-fi thrillers in Cult Camp Classics, Vol. 1. Two of the commentaries are hosted by Tom Weaver, a noted authority on sci-fi and horror films whose historical acumen is more casual than academic: While sharing the commentary on Queen of Outer Space with the film's titular star Laurie Mitchell (who became a mainstay at fan conventions at Weaver's invitation), Weaver fails to explain how the production came to use props and costumes from the classic Forbidden Planet, and that's a glaring oversight. He compensates as an amiable interviewer with the equally good-natured Mitchell, and it's a treat to hear them enthusiastically reading unfilmed scenes from the film's original screenplay. For the commentary on Attack of the 50-Foot Woman, Weaver is joined by the film's comely costar Yvette Vickers (another regular at sci-fi conventions), and their combined anecdotes provide an adequate oral history of this camp-classic production. Star Wars veterans and special-effects masters Dennis Muren and Phil Tippett provide the loose-and-lazy commentary on The Giant Behemoth, which consists mostly of Muren making sarcastic jokes about the film's glacial pacing. It's hardly the authoritative commentary that some fans might've hoped for, but Muren and Tippett are well-versed in special-effects history (Muren even owns the original stop-motion Behemoth creature model), and they share an infectious enthusiasm for the films that inspired them to excel in their profession.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection Vol. 11: Book your return flight to the Satellite of Love and join Joel, Mike and the 'bots for another fearful foursome of flops in this collection of episodes from the Peabody Award-winning series Mystery Science Theater 3000. First up on Volume 11's menu of muck is Season Two's Ring of Terror, with Joel, Crow and Tom Servo riffing furiously on a half-baked story of fraternity pranks gone wrong; it's partnered with another interminable episode of the Bela Lugosi serial The Phantom Creeps. Next is Season Four's The Indestructible Man, in which Joel performs a frightening imitation of the movie's star, Lon Chaney Jr.; an episode of The Undersea Kingdom is also celebrated with a parade that goes predictably awry. Season Four's Tormented features headless ghosts, a guilt-ridden Richard Carlson, and Joel stuck in a ventilation shaft, plus a day-rescuing round of happy thoughts. And last but not least is Season Ten's Horrors of Spider Island, a German-made monster movie about dancers on a deserted island and a giant spider than transforms their manager into a hideous creature; Mike also undergoes a man-to-spider switcheroo after getting trapped in the 'bots' homemade spider web. For veteran MiSTies and pop culture fanatics, it doesn't get funnier than this. Extras include theatrical trailers for all of the films save Ring of Terror; a brief interview with Tormented director Bert I. Gordon, his daughter Susan, and star Joseph Turkel, and wrap-arounds from the syndicated Mystery Science Hour, with Mike Nelson as an obsequious Jack Perkins, are also included. Shooter: A novel by the Washington Post's Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic Stephen Hunter gives the movie a logical spine, even if the premise itself is the stuff of conspiracy theorists. Wahlberg gets support from Michael Pena, as a skeptical FBI agent; Kate Mara, as a trustworthy widow; and Ned Beatty, trailing along memories of Network, as a supremely cynical Senator. Along with the well-executed action sequences (the previously unreliable director Antoine Fuqua gets it in gear here), the movie includes a few potshots at the Bush administration. No, that doesn't put Shooter at the level of The Parallax View or All the President's Men, but it provides some tang along with the flying bullets.
