'Tales Before Tolkien' News! - Xoanon @ 14:10 PST

TALES BEFORE TOLKIEN: THE ROOTS OF MODERN FANTASY

Doug Anderson writes: I recently got the finished cover for my book TALES BEFORE TOLKIEN: THE ROOTS OF MODERN FANTASY, due out in August from Ballantine Books.

It has a gorgeous John Howe cover, and I thought you might like to post it. The book is a collection of fantasies from the time before Tolkien, and it includes a number of rare stories that specifically inspired Tolkien-- like "The Story of Sigurd" from Andrew Lang's RED FAIRY BOOK, "Puss-cat Mew" by E. H. Knatchbull-Hugessen, and "The Golden Key" by George MacDonald.

There are twenty-one stories in all, plus a never-before-published fairy play by David Lindsay, author of A VOYAGE TO ARCTURUS, a novel much admired by Tolkien and C. S. Lewis. Other authors in the book include: Ludwig Tieck, Frank R. Stockton, Richard Garnett, William Morris, H. Rider Haggard, E. Nesbit, John Buchan, Clemence Housman, L. Frank Baum, Lord Dunsany, William Hope Hodsgon, Kenneth Morris, Arthur Machen, Francis Stevens, James Branch Cabell, A. Merritt, E. A. Wyke-Smith, and Austin Tappan Wright.

The book will be published simultaneously in trade paperback at $14.95 0345458559 and in hardcover at $26.95 0345458540. The on-sale date I've been told is August 26th.

WETA/Sideshow LOTR Bookend News - Xoanon @ 13:47 PST
I recently got an email that cancelled my order for the WETA/Sideshow LOTR Bookends... but my heart started beating again when I read the following on their LOTR page:

The Bookends get a Boost!

The 'No Admittance' bookends are now part of an exciting promotion with famed Tolkien publisher, Houghton Mifflin. Sideshow/Weta has suspended sales of the bookends by themselves as they will now be available in November as part of package that will include a one volume hard cover edition of The Lord of the Rings. The book with bookend set will be sold at finer bookstores around the country and will make for a wonderful Holiday gift item!

Look for them this fall!

The Noble Collection Goes for Brooch - Xoanon @ 10:36 PST
maegwen writes: The Noble Collection has finally posted a new item in their LOTR collection – Galadriel’s brooch. You can see the original in this picture located in The TORN scrapbook.

The item is new, but it originates from ‘Fellowship of the Ring,’ not “The Two Towers.” I wrote to Noble Collection several weeks ago inquiring whether they would be offering any pieces from TTT – specifically Gandalf and Arwen’s cloak brooches – and they responded “Thanks, for your interest in our products. Yes, we will be carrying those items. Keep a check on our website for future updates.” [More]

Sideshow/Weta Collectible Update - Calisuri @ 14:30 PST
Some small updates from Sideshow/Weta Collectibles today. First, you can now pre-order 'The Dilemmas of Smeagol' medallion, the first Gollum related piece from Sideshow/Weta to date. Secondly, if you didn't know, Sideshow/Weta has a European Union warehouse to accommodate EU customers who don't want to pay the HUGE shipping costs from the US. They just added a bunch of new LOTR related product to that warehouse, including Two Towers Figures and Busts, as well as the 'Escape' plaque, 'No Admittance' bookends, and weapon sets.
