TOLKIEN ART OF STEVE HICKMAN - Xoanon @ 17:37 PST
From: Idril

THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RINGS,
TOLKIEN ART OF STEVE HICKMAN

DATE: From Tuesday, March 13, 2001 to
Sunday, April 29, 2001

Franklin Center, PA - Steve Hickman's artworks explore the mysterious, the beautiful, and the visionary in the ever-evolving universe of mythology, fantasy and dreams. The Franklin Mint Museum highlights the work of this award-winning fantasy artist in a special exhibit running from March 13 through April 29.

The exhibit focuses primarily on works envisioning the world of J.R.R.

Tolkein's classic fantasy trilogy, The Lord of the Rings. Hickman brings to life the mysterious and wonderful terrain of Tolkein's world, and with it the eternal message of how loyalty and friendship have the power to triumph over evil. His art takes the viewer on a journey to exalted kingdoms and to the depths of fiery underworlds.

Along the way, he presents amazing visions of dragons, black riders, and other creatures from the world beyond the edge of our imaginings.

In all of his work, Hickman's stated goal is to "evoke that elusive, mysterious beauty and the sense of wonder of creation." His art was first inspired by the covers of the science fiction and fantasy books he read as a youth in the 1960s. In addition, Hickman has been influenced by the "wonder and strangeness of the various places that I have lived with my family." His formative years were spent overseas in the Philippines and Pakistan. He has also lived in Arizona, South Central Texas, Hawaii, California, and the scenic Hudson Valley in New York State, where he currently resides.

Today, Hickman's illustrations are produced primarily for book covers of science fiction and fantasy, and for comic book covers. Other areas include postage stamp illustration; calendar and magazine illustration; set and character design for motion pictures and video productions; and the first published novel in a planned trilogy, The Lemurian Stone. His awards include a Gold Award, a Hugo Award for Achievement in Science Fiction and Fantasy, and a number of Chesley Awards. Among many other locations, his works are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, The Orlando Space Center, the New York Society of Illustrators, and, locally, at the Delaware Art Museum.

The Fellowship of the Rings, the Tolkein Art of Steve Hickman runs from March 13 through April 29, 2001. The Franklin Mint Museum is located on Route 1, just four miles south of Media and about thirty-minutes south of Philadelphia. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. till 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. Till 4:30 p.m. Admission and parking are free. For general information about the Museum call 610-459-6168.

LOTR Goodies - Xoanon @ 15:23 PST
Ringer Spy Saint sends in a great summary of places you can sheck out to get all the latest goodies from LOTR.

LOTR Movie Toys! - Yep, I've seen the pics. in this months PREVIEWS magazine (which shows upcoming comics and figures and such). It showed the Aragorn figure, a Gandalf 12-inch, Merry, Pippin, an Orc from Moria, and a Ringwraith with his steed (which ROCKS!) So go pick up your copy of Previews to check it out. by the way...each figure photo had "All sculptures not final. Pending license & actor approval" across it. kinda neat.

Heres a little info: previews.diamondcomics.com

Hildebrandt book! - I dunno if this is new or not, but its the first i've seen it. has reproductions of all of the Hildebrandt's popular calander paintings, and a few new ones.

More info: Hildebrandt Book

Calanders! - Hildebrandt brother's Tolkien calandar (2002). Same old paintings, re-produced. ho-hum.
Fellowship of the Ring 2002 wall calandar (which is the usual yearly one). 13 new paintings by Ted Naismith (!!!!)

Fellowship of the Ring 2002 Desk Diary - this is like a daily calandar kinda thing, with each day having an excerpt from FOTR, and illustrated by Naismith's paintings and line drawings. Last but not least, the LOTR 2001 movie calandar. Just pics from the movies for each month. we've seen all the pics.

Thats a lot of Tolkien in one magazine. You guys have probably already heard of all of these, but i figured i'd let you know anyways. i had nothing better to do so i typed up this email :)

btw....i almost didn't send this out after seeing the "New Line Purchases TORn" headline...but then i read the article. nice one guys, lol.

Teaser Poster Warning - Calisuri @ 13:48 PST
Ringer fan Jamie sent us this warning about the teaser poster:

"Just a quick note. If you decide to mount your poster (not sure if you already have) be careful,. the quality of the print is fairly low and scraps off quite easily. I just picked up a frame, glass and backing, wiped the glass down and mounted the poster. With some slight adjustments of the glass the tops of the poster scraped off to my horror! Kind of a shame since you can't pick them up anymore at this point. Anyways just thought I'd let you know."

Thanks for sending that in Jamie!

Jincey's Picks: Middle-earth Handmade Map - Calisuri @ 16:25 PST
This month's featured items are wonderful hand-drawn maps of Middle earth available from Richard at mcguffnstuff! Richard actually copies Tolkien's maps in meticulous detail onto heavy parchment stock using colored inks. He has several maps to choose from: ‘Middle earth’, ‘A Part of the Shire’, ‘Thror’s Map’, ‘Map of Mirkwood’, and a ‘Close-up of Mordor and Gondor’. The map of Middle earth is a huge 24" x 38" in size.

Richard has been copying both fictional and historic maps for about 16 years and began doing Tolkien’s maps about five years ago. By taking the time necessary for accuracy, this craftsman ensures the maps are very true to Tolkien’s work. He does not add to or take anything out of them. A great deal of work goes into each rendering, making them well worth the price. He can also age the parchment to give the maps the appearance of being very old.

These maps are exquisitely rendered and obviously would be great additions to a fan’s collection. Check out McGuffnStuff!
