Myth and Middle-earth - Tehanu @ 00:52 PST
"Myth and Middle-earth," by Leslie Ellen Jones, Cold Spring Press, 2002

This book is a good one for anyone who’s interested in knowing a bit more about Tolkien and his creation of Middle-earth. It’s written in an easygoing, readable style and touches on the main points covered in detail by other writers, but also offers new insights owing to the author’s knowledge of Celtic mythology and languages. It would make a good book for Tolkien ‘newbies’ and yet it also has some surprising facts that I hadn’t learned anywhere else, and which I believe are not that widely-known, so it will also be of interest to people who have read widely on the subject.

After a brief outline of Tolkien’s life and an introduction to his special field, philology, the book looks at subjects that occur in Tolkien’s work, grouping them under headings such as "Kings and Heroes," "Wastelands," "The Nazgul and the Undead," "Riddles and Prophecies," or "Marching Trees," to name just a few. Author Leslie Ellen Jones does a kind of enjoyable intellectual ramble around each topic, examining the various models that may have served as an inspiration to Tolkien, and discussing how he adapts and combines certain elements of older myths, or in some cases turns them on their head entirely. Rather than being a dry study, the writer does a kind of free-association of ideas about Tolkien and mythology and medieval literature. She has consciously focussed on the Celtic and Arthurian elements that are not widely discussed elsewhere, which is sure to interest other fans of that folklore.

A list of further reading is provided for those who want to explore further.

LOTR Collectors Beware...The 9 Are Coming! - Xoanon @ 10:53 PST
Xoanon here, Eric sent this along to us yesterday clearing up some internet rumors about gift sets of LOTR action figures coming out (or not coming out) anytime soon, take a look.

Been a while since I had anything to write you all about (getting psyched for the 18th, yet?) but I did research a bit that is of interest to any of the folks interested in the collectible stuff.

One item of great interest has been the Toy Biz Fellowship of the Ring "Deluxe Gift Pack" ... this is a large package which includes ALL NINE members of the Fellowship in the 6" figure size, along with a costume-jewelry "One Ring" on a chain, and a map of Middle Earth.

There has been a lot of mis-information and even DIS-information floating around the 'net about this product ... especially because it seemed to have arrived in most of the world BEFORE the USA.

The general scuttlebutt seems to have been that these are "already gone" ... sort of like the collectible rings from Applause last year. This has been reinforced by unscrupulous eBay sellers who are advertising the item as "rare" and "hard to find"... and jacking the price up accordingly.

IT IS NOT TRUE.

I have the word "staright from the horse's mouth", as it were, and I will paste the response from Toy Biz here:

Thank you for contacting Toy Biz Consumer Service. We appreciate your taking the time to contact us.

We are making a Lord of the Rings 6" Fellowship of the Ring Gift Pack that includes Gandalf, Frodo Legolas, Gimli, Pippin, Merry, Boromir, Strider, and Sam. This is due out in early December. The gift pack will include a map of Middle Earth and a metal ring on a string. (Note the month! -Eric)

Assortment I (6") of The Two Towers will include Faramir, Legolas, Gandalf the White, Gondorian Soldier, and Easterling. Assortment II (6") of the Two Towers will include Roharian Soldier, King Theoden, Wormtongue, Eomer, Saruman, and Aragorn. Both these assortments are due out in late October. Please contact us later this year for information on assortments III (6") and IV (6") of the Two Towers.

Twin Pack assortment I of The Two Towers will include Elf Archer & Berserker Urak-Hai, Ugluck & Pippin, and Grishnakh & Merry. This is due out in late October.

Deluxe Horses assortment of The Two Towers will include Aragorn & Brego, Gandalf the White & Shadowfax, and Ringwraith & Horse. This is due out in late October.

Assortment I of the 12" The Two Towers figures will include Legolas, Bilbo, Eowyn, and the Witch King Ringwraith. These are due out in late October.

The 14" Treebeard from The Two Towers is due out in late December.

That is all we have planned at this point for 2002. Please contact us again later this fall for information on the figures for assortment III (6") and IV (6") of The Two Towers movie.

Note that the aforementioned "gift pack" is NOT DUE in US stores until December (which, by my calendar, JUST STARTED!). The fact that a few units made their way to the streets early is typical of mass-merchandising, and has been used by some to perpetuate the rumor that they have already "come and gone".

Having said all of that, I *DO* expect that this will be a popular item ... so when you see them on the shelves this month ... well ... to paraphrase our favorite "she-elf" ...

"If you want them - COME and claim them!"
