ELF 2006: Sunday Images & Report

8/12/06, 1:12 pm EST - Xoanon

ELF 2006 Images TORN Staffer Garfeimao writes: Sunday at ELF began with the Charity brunch with Billy Boyd. Over $5000 was raised for the Scottish Youth Theater, and part of that came from an impromptu live auction of one of Billy's shirts. This would not be the only impromptu auction Billy hosted this day, but I'll get to the other one later. Billy wandered around chatting with everyone at each table and was a gracious host, as usual. The movie had problems finding a distributor, but is finally gettting a limited release in the US on September 15th. I hope everyone has the chance to see this! [More]

Astin candid about illness

8/12/06, 12:20 pm EST - Xoanon

As could be expected, Sean Astin is approached often by strangers. What may be surprising, however, is that not all of them want to talk about the actor's roles in the epic "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy or his early work on the '80s classic "The Goonies." Instead, many want to discuss his very public mother, Patty Duke, and her very public battle with bipolar disorder. From a clerk at an airport gift shop to a makeup artist hired for a series of appearances in Salt Lake City, they say they have been affected in some way by the mental illness. "Everywhere I go, people say that they've been touched by it," the 35-year-old Astin said, stopping in Utah as part of a public-awareness campaign about bipolar disorder, also called manic depression. "People are whispering less about it." [More]

Professor Segura's presentation, "Tolkien, Lewis, and Hollywood: What Images Cannot Say," will center on differences between literature and cinema as artistic means, particularly from J.R.R. So Sean did his appearance, handled the autograph line like the champ he is, and then we were hit by another missing guest. [More]

Jackson's story to be told in biography

8/07/06, 5:18 pm EST - Xoanon

The story of how a boy from Pukerua Bay, north of Wellington, beat Hollywood at its own game is to be told in an authorised biography of New Zealand film-maker Peter Jackson. 'Peter Jackson: A Film-maker's Journey' will be published by HarperCollins New Zealand on November 10, just in time for the Christmas market. Following numerous approaches, Jackson chose to work on the biography with Brian Sibley, a writer and the producer of the acclaimed BBC radio dramatisation of the Lord of the Rings. The biography, written over several years, tells the story of Jackson's life through his own words, as well as drawing on the memories of friends, family and associates. [More]
