Gory Days

11/12/05, 10:44 am EST - Xoanon

Sure, Peter Jackson directed the fellowship of the Ring and has a shot at three Oscars this year -- for directing, producing, and adapting the first part of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. You could say the guy's arrived. But you probably couldn't say much about the rest of his oeuvre, as the 40-year-old Kiwi's previous work wasn't exactly mainstream. Here, Jackson talks about his oddball early efforts. [More]

Hall Of Fire This Weekend -- Seven Deadly Sins In LoTR

11/11/05, 6:44 pm EST - Demosthenes

This weekend in Hall of Fire we'll be discussing the Seven Deadly Sins as they can be found in Lord of the Rings.

First there is Pride -- the excessive belief in one's own abilities. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity. Perhaps Boromir or Denethor could tell us about this fault? Envy is the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation. It's probably something Saruman knows a great deal about. [More]

Tolkien Pie in the Sky

11/11/05, 10:28 am EST - Xoanon

Roheryn writes: There was an unlooked-for Tolkien reference in the October, 2005 issue of 'Sky' Magazine. The article was a regular food feature called "Pie in the Sky" which always starts with a "delicious quote." This month's was by none other than J.R.R. Tolkien, with one of my favorite lines from "The Hobbit" -- "If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world." Words to live by! (I think I'll have a pint!) [More]

Ring Bearers

11/10/05, 8:46 pm EST - Xoanon

Composer Howard Shore was influenced by ancient mythology when writing the film score to "The Lord of the Rings," Peter Jackson's film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's trilogy -- just as Richard Wagner was when he wrote his "Ring" Cycle 150 years ago. This weekend the Collegiate Chorale performs excerpts from Wagner's "Ring" and Shore's "Lord of the Rings Symphony," a six-movement work created from the movie scores. [More]

An evening in Music City with Lord of the Rings

11/09/05, 10:20 pm EST - Xoanon

Matthew Melton writes: Last weekend at the Curb Event Center at Belmont University, the Nashville Symphony Orchestra presented composer Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings Symphony. It was a great moment for fans like me who have followed the novels since long before the films came into being. I first met Bilbo Baggins in the spring of 1974. British author J.R.R. Tolkien had passed away only a year before that, but the extraordinary little hobbit Bilbo had already made his way into a chapter of a literary anthology in my 6th grade English class. The year was barely over before I had purchased a paperback copy of Tolkien's trilogy, The Lord of the Rings. I spent the next month reading delightedly through a story unlike any other I had ever read. At the time I lived in a home without television, so books were my TV. [More]

'Halo' Script Review

11/07/05, 2:20 pm EST - Xoanon

The folks from Latinoreview write: Yes folks, we at Latinoreview got ourselves the multimillion-dollar script of Halo by Alex Garland! I had to pull some Sam Fisher Splinter Cell moves to get it – but we got it. Let’s see, they paid Alex Garland $1 million bucks to write it, they sold it to Universal and Fox for $5 million bucks plus 10 percent of the gross. And they gave a seven-figure deal to both Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh to exec produce the movie. A $10 million dollar script – at least. Wow. The question: Is the script any good? My answer? [More]

Cullen out-clouts Jackson

11/06/05, 8:35 pm EST - Xoanon

Finance Minister Michael Cullen has toppled the most powerful man in Hollywood, film-maker Peter Jackson, in a new list of the most influential New Zealanders. Prime Minister Helen Clark, into her third term as most powerful politician in the country, held on to the No 1 slot for the second year in the NZ Listener's annual list of 50 formidable Kiwis. Dr Cullen, controller of the nation's purse strings, snatched second place from Jackson, who slipped to No 5, showing how fickle power can be. Just six months ago, Jackson was named the most powerful man in Tinseltown by Premiere magazine, pushing aside the likes of Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise. [More]

Peter Jackson leads NZ film biz to new heights

11/06/05, 8:21 pm EST - Xoanon

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - When Peter Jackson unveiled the first "Lord of the Rings" movie in 2001, it ushered in a torrent of attention on New Zealand and its film industry, kicking it into high gear and showing that the country was a viable place for Hollywood to make its movies. Four years later, with Jackson's "King Kong" just more than a month away, the director's shadow still looms large over the film industry in the remote country of 4.1 million people. "He's important because of the films he makes himself, he's hugely important because of the infrastructure he's developed to enable him to make the films himself," New Zealand Film Commission chief executive Ruth Harley said at the annual American Film Market in Santa Monica. 'Rings' Fan Site Spawns DVD

11/06/05, 8:18 pm EST - Xoanon

It’s a love story set in Middle-earth. When New Line’s “The Lord of the Rings” films went into production, fans searched for news of the movies and dissected themes of the beloved J.R.R. Tolkien books on the Internet -- largely through the Web site TheOneRing.net. The site and its users caught “Rings” director Peter Jackson’s eye. Jackson and his crew not only read the site every day, but also started sending contributions to it. Out of that collaboration grew a documentary all about “Rings” devotees, also known as “Ringers,” said Cliff Broadway, site contributing editor and writer-interviewer on Ringers: Lord of the Fans, due on DVD Nov. 22 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. 11/06/05, 11:20 am EST - Xoanon

MANKATO, Minn. - Some of the old-timers in Bruce Birkemeyer's rock collecting club weren't exactly encouraging when he wondered if he should enter his "Lord of the Rings" display in a regional competition. The problem was that Birkemeyer had literally thought outside the box. The competitions sponsored by mineralogical societies consist pretty much exclusively of rock hounds displaying their most interesting finds in a 3-foot by 4-foot display box. [More]
