Learning to pick up a good hobbit

10/07/01, 8:57 pm EST - Xoanon

Other people's routines can often seem strange. For a year and a half Billy Boyd lived in a rented home in near Wellington, New Zealand. At 4.30 most mornings a car would pick him up to take him to a nearby film set. By dawn the 33-year-old Scots actor, still half asleep, would be in a make-up van being transformed into Pippin, a 3ft 6in hobbit in J R R Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. [More]

Bobby Slayton, who also appears in the film (Bandits), says Blanchett was a real pro when she had to cry: 'There was one scene we did where she had to cry. Fellowship Trailer Shown in Halves on BBC

10/07/01, 9:06 am EST - Strider

From Gothmog and Wife:

I taped the 5/10/01 edition of the Beeb's film review show Film 2001, (or rather my wife did, as I was at work) expecting to see the new FOTR trailer on our 28.5 inch widescreen Dolby Digital TV. As I cannot download Q-time 5, I was panting in anticipation. When I flipped back my VCR, I was disappointed (if that word can actually be applied to the deliriously impressive footage) to find it was only the last half of the trailer! Point I'm (finally) making is the BBC's hoopla about it being the new LOTR trailer, when it was in fact merely half of it. Boy what half though. In the end I should shut up and dance though. Half full is better than half empty eh?

The poll asks, "Are you planning on seeing the new Lord of the Rings movie when it comes out?" 52 percent of the respondants have chosen "no." I do feel sorry for the people in charge of this 'Rant & Rave' feedback...but here goes..

R & R QUESTION NO. 170: BASED ON TRAILERS AND PREVIEWS, WHAT FALL OR WINTER MOVIES LOOK GREAT, WHICH LOOK TERRIBLE AND WHY?

This came to mind for two reasons. One, there was considerable buzz around the office water cup -- that's all we can afford, one cup -- about the new trailer for "The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring." On the other hand, there's a trailer for a film called "How High" that seems to suggest two rappers with joints can outsmart the intellectuals at Harvard. [More]

Hall of Fire Chats for October 6th and 7th

10/05/01, 10:18 pm EST - Strider

Thirty-ninth heir of Isildur; Ranger of Middle-Earth; King of the reunited realms of Arnor and Gondor. As a child, he was brought into the home of Elrond as the son of Arathorn but both his identity and lineage were kept secret, and he was known as Estel; Hope. Most like Isildur amongst all his heirs he was, and it was at Rivendell that he first saw his future wife, Arwen Undómiel, daughter of Elrond. This weekend, the Hall of Fire discusses one of the greatest men in the history of Middle-Earth, a leader who shaped the future of men and the first king under the Reign of Men in Middle-Earth - Aragorn son of Arathorn, Estel, Elessar or Strider. Burger King Promotion Spy Report

10/04/01, 11:59 pm EST - Calisuri

So what IS Burger King doing to promote LOTR? Fear not, from this spy report, it doesn't sound like we will have to tolerate "The One Onion Ring." Ringer Elenhim sends this in:

"Hey there. An inside source from Burger King tells me that a 10 minute preview (perhaps the same one from Cannes) was shown to restaurant managers today at a National Franchise Association Restaurant Managers Conference in Birmingham, Alabama. They were also informed of various promotional items to be available with the release of FOTR including: 19 individual character toys that are described as "interlocking toys with voice and light capabilities" and also 4 goblets depicting different characters. "

I guess I'm going to have to start hitting Burger King...but it is going to be extremely hard to break my newly found passion for 'In and Out Burgers.'

From: Jason Clarke

I'll preface this review by stating that I am a big Tolkien fan. I'm such a big Tolkien fan that I will admit I find the idea of action figures, computer games and Burger King Kids' Meals based on The Lord of the Rings to be something that is at best, very odd, and at worst, sacrilege. [More]

11 Things You Don't Know About LOTR

10/04/01, 1:22 pm EST - Xoanon

(Just try me pal... -Xo)

Bringing J.R.R. Tolkien's epic trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, to the big screen is unquestionably one of the largest projects undertaken in movie history -- and perhaps the greatest business venture ever mounted on New Zealand soil. Kiwi director Peter Jackson (Heavenly Creatures, The Frighteners) pushed to make three films back to back based on Tolkien's masterpiece, which depicts an epic battle between the good folk of the Fellowship, including Hobbits, Dwarves and the Races of Men, and the evil armies of the dark lord, Sauron, for control of the "one ring" that gives ultimate power over all. There was a one hour show on Tolkien yesterday on the Book Television Channel (Bell Express Vu Canada, 3 Oct. 6 pm Atlantic Time), dealing mostly with the writing of LOTR. There were interviews with his children, pictures, Judi Dench reading portions of the books, and readings from letters he sent to his children. There were stories told of literary meetings with C.S. Lewis and others, and very interesting parallels made between scenes in the stories and events of Tolkien's life. A great insight into the writing of LOTR.

School foodservice operators receive promotional kits containing movie posters, static clings, T-shirts, and buttons when they order qualifying General Mills products. Students who accumulate three stamps on custom "frequency cards'" by purchasing General Mills products score a movie poster and enter into a sweeps offering JVC electronics as prizes. I'm assuming that the invitations were sent out to media outlets and press (I can ONLY assume, as I was out sick from work on Friday when the publication I work for [the A&F Quarterly] received its invitation, so I haven't actually SEEN the thing; I only heard about it because a thoughtful co-worker (bless 'im) called me at home while I was convalescing). !Spoilers! My father just gave me his latest edition of AARP (American Association of Retired People) Nov.-Dec. 2001, and it has an article on the upcoming films. Its called The Lure of the Rings and its covers a small history of the books and their impact on the author and works that followed in its footsteps i.e Harry. I can't scan it but they have a web site and would probably send you a copy of the mag. You'll get a laugh at some of their alternate people that could have played the roles (Dennis Franz as Samwise). The address is www.mygeneration.org.
