The magic number is '24'
1/13/06, 9:13 pm EST - Xoanon
The following will take place Sunday between 8 and 10p.m. About 15 million people will tune in to the fifth-season premiere of Fox's "24," and most of these viewers - or around 3 million more than last season's average, by the way - are what might be call hardened "24-nistas." They are a passionate, dedicated, obsessive crowd who have waited anxiously for this hour to arrive. The preceding NFL playoff game is a mere obstacle to be endured before 8 p.m. Nirvana. They have spent the past eight months dreaming about their show. They've watched and rewatched the fourth-season DVD collection. They've planned "24" parties for Sunday night. And they've studied every reported fifth-season development with dutiful and slavish attention. [More

'In Elven Lands' CD Update
1/10/06, 8:00 pm EST - Xoanon
Carvin Knowles, co-producer of 'In Elven Lands'
writes: January 31, 2006 marks the American release of Voiceprint Records (UK) "In Elven Lands," music inspired by the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien. Some of your readers may have heard the rhumors over the past few years of a project that features musicological reconstructions of what the music of Middle-Earth might sound like, including several songs with Quenya and Sindarin lyrics. A few of you probably even have the pirated demos that leaked out in spring of 2001 (thanks to the Audio department of Weta) that feature Jon Anderson (of Yes fame), if you do, don't tell me, I don't want to know. 1/09/06, 10:48 pm EST - Celeborn

Settling the score in Middle-Earth
1/09/06, 2:35 pm EST - Xoanon
Christopher Nightingale doesn't mind admitting that when he first heard London producer Kevin Wallace discuss plans for a stage musical based on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, he thought "it was a really bad idea." Of course, Nightingale is quick to add that when the notion was first broached three years ago, it was premised on an entirely different theatrical template than the $27-million show that will have its world premiere at Toronto's Princess of Wales Theatre on March 23 (after six weeks in previews beginning Feb. 2). Technical Oscars only hope for NZ films
1/07/06, 11:45 am EST - Xoanon
The chances of New Zealand-made movie blockbusters getting Oscar nominations for anything other than technical awards fell yesterday when they were absent from a major Oscar predictor's nominations. Neither King Kong director Peter Jackson
nor Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe director Andrew Adamson were nominated by the Directors Guild of America (DGA) for its annual award. The DGA nominees were George Clooney (Good Night and Good Luck), Paul Haggis (Crash), Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain), Bennett Miller (Capote) and Steven Spielberg (Munich). Adamson was considered an outsider but Jackson was thought to have some chance after receiving a Golden Globe nomination for Best Director and excellent reviews for King Kong. At least four DGA award nominees usually go on to earn Oscar nominations, and their movies usually get Best Picture nominations as well. Oscar predictors say it is highly unusual for directors absent from the DGA nominations to win an Oscar. [More
