New Hall of Fire Topic Keeping Chatters Up Nights
- Tookish @ 20:18 PST
Ok well maybe not... but here it goes! Elves, Men, Death and Tolkien In Tolkien's world, the contrast between the fate of Elves and the fate of Humans is dramatic. Together we will explore the differences and ponder the implications behind them. How can death be a gift given to Men by Ilúvatar? Many people in Western society would consider death to be more of a curse then a blessing, yet Tolkien repeatedly refers to death as a 'gift'. What is the nature of the fate of these two races? What can we learn from their differences? How do their deaths reflect their lives? These and other questions will be explored at our next Hall of Fire chat. Date: Saturday, July 15, 2000 This topic was sent in by a Hall of Fire fan, but I have lost their nickname. Thank you for your contribution and I apologize for not being able to credit you today. Email me please!

New Hall of Fire Topic
- Tookish @ 15:19 PST
Greetings Tolkien Chat Fans! My commerades Gandalf and Gamgee have recently returned from an excursion to Rivendell. There they met with Elrond to ponder at length an important topic, and they were good enough to bring the gem back for us to discuss as well: What is the Nature of Magic in Middle-earth? Throughout the history of Tolkien's world, the use of what we call magic was a regular practice for both the side of Good as well as Evil. Spells are woven and cast, swords glow blue when enemies are close at hand, Sauron hurls fire from Orthanc, Burt the Troll's handbag talks, rings lend their wearers special abilities and powers... From palantiri to the rods of the five wizards, what is it all about? Elves don't prefer the word 'magic,' so what is it exactly? In addition to this, we'll share our favorite magic moments. What is yours: the mirror of Galadriel, Luthien casting her spell on Morgoth, Bilbo's vanishing act, Gandalf encountering the winged Nazgul, or perhaps something else? Hall of Fire Topic for Saturday
- Tookish @ 00:36 PST
Hullo! Sorry to post this so late, been wrestling with my puter lo these many days. Hope to see you Saturday! Tookish Hammer and Tongs, the Hall of Fire Is at It Again! If you could learn any Middle-earth skill, what would it be? Stealth, from Hobbits? Making elven cloaks? Ring forging (ok maybe not ring forging ;) )? How to make lembas? One of the fascinating attributes of Middle-earth is the craftiness of its peoples. Dwarf, elf, human, hobbit, all have special characterstics, skills, and talents. Come on down to the Hall of Fire and tell us what *you'd* like to be able to do! Saturday, July 1, at 5:30 EST [10:30 GMT]
Check out The Hall of Fire homepage for more details.
